Make it in Music: The Grammy Awards and You.

With the Grammy’s airing in just about 5 days, the music and sound world turns their attention to the nominees and performers.  It’s an exciting time of year!  Maybe you watch every year, maybe you couldn’t care less.  But here are some reasons why you should care and watch.

1. You will learn who the power players are in the industry

You think, “Yea, I know Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Macklemore, Taylor Swift…”  I’m not talking about those power players, I’m talking about the awards they don’t show on the televised program.  The winners of Producer of the Year, Best Engineered Album, Surround Sound Mixer…  These are the people that you will run in to, that you may work with and may even get nominated with.  Hey, it could happen!   But what this DOES give you the opportunity to do is learn from them.  Follow them on Twitter, build a relationship.    Plus wouldn’t it be embarrassing if you worked with one of them and never know they were nominated or even won?  Educate Yourself.

2. Learn how to Act

A lot of people are humble, grateful and genuinely honored to win and watch how they carry themselves.  They exude professionalism and show you what it means to be successful and create a successful brand.

3. Don’t Act like them

On the flip side, you will undoubtably see people stumble up on stage and embarrass themselves.  Learn from that too.

4. See just how many people it takes to create an album

There may be one writer, one singer and one track, but the odds are there is a producer, engineer, 2nd engineer, mastering engineer…  The reason this is important is because you will need to be a team player, no matter what you do at what level.

5. See that there are people responsible for more than just producing and performing

It’s great to want to become a producer or artist, but you don’t have to be to make an impact in the industry.  You will see Sound Designers, Engineers, Mastering Engineers and many more for all styles and types of music.  This should show you that there is a lot of opportunity not just as a producer or artist.

Having said all of that, it’s also entertaining, they performances are usually over the top and incredible.  What are some of your favorite parts of the Grammy’s?
