A Guest Student Entry from a Current Student, Scott Osment.

“My name is Scott Osment and I’m from Austin, Texas. I have a bit of
experience in home recording. I learned a lot of what I know about
recording from getting my own 8-channel mixer and just playing with it.
I am an active member of the Austin music “scene” and have gained a lot
of knowledge about what it takes to be in a band. I’ve played all types
of venues from big clubs to pizza places and even remember getting paid
with pizza to play at a record shop. Any knowledge I came into Dark
Horse with was all self-taught. So after visiting a month and a half
ago, to see what a professional studio looks like and what the program
would offer, I decided to take the plunge into the professional world
of audio engineering.

I took my new-to-me car with my sister and dad on the 14-hour drive to
the Nashville area, along with my drum set and other assorted stuff.
When classes began, it didn’t take long to realize there were actually
way more than the ten things that I knew about recording to learn. I
was genuinely shocked at how much there is to know and how much
actually goes into a professional recording session. Mind you, we’re
really only talking about what I learned in the first day or so. There
are so many things are involved like microphone placement, what kind of
microphones sound best on certain instruments, what polar patterns are,
the patching bay, effects etc.

At first, I looked at the huge console with a glazed stare of
confusion. But after a couple of days I learned what most all the
buttons and knobs mean. I can’t speak for others too much, but I am
glad I knew at least a bit coming in about the subject at hand. Having
said that, I like how fast the class moves.

Overall, this first week was pretty awesome. I learned that there is
more than my normal DIY style recording and that it’s going to open up
a world of “know how” for me. Also, the comfort level of the studio is
10 out of 10. I’m a a little biased though, because I’m generally a fan
of any place with a full kitchen and plenty of comfortable chairs.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to what the rest of the program has to
